Cannabutter 101: How Much Cannabutter Does an Ounce of Flower Make?

For many people, edibles are a preferred way to enjoy cannabis. However, what if you can’t find an edible that suits your personal tastes or needs? While most of us are quick to enjoy a cannabis infused cookie or brownie, some of us don’t have the same sweet tooth while others need something less sugary for medical reasons. The good news is pretty much any food can be infused by cooking with your own cannabutter or cannaoil.

How Much Weed Do You Need to Make Cannabutter at Home?

If you can’t buy cannabutter at your local dispensary don’t worry – it’s not difficult to make if you’re willing to put in the time. However, if you've never made cannabutter before there are a few things you need to know. First and most important is how much bud are you going to need to make your butter as potent as you're hoping for.

How Much Cannabutter Does an Ounce of Flower Make?

Most cannabutter recipes will tell you to use between an eighth (3.5 grams) and a quarter (7 grams) per cup (2 sticks) of butter. By this math, you would be able to make a full pound of butter with an ounce of cannabis flower. However, your recipe can be adjusted for potency based on the potency of the strain and how strong you want your final product to be.

How Potency of Your Flower Affects Your Homemade Cannabutter

Something that not everyone takes into consideration when making edibles at home is the potency of weed itself. A strain with a higher THC percentage is going to make a more potent butter than a less potent strain.

So, if you're considering buying a less expensive - and less potent - strain for your baking adventures you might want to rethink your investment. You're more likely to get the desired effect if you use less of a more potent strain than if you use more of a less potent one.

Can You Calculate the Potency of Homemade Cannabis Edibles?

Edibles are tricky business, and it can be hard to "get it right." If you've tried making edibles in the past with poor results, the potency of your strain may be the reason. Next time, consider getting a higher THC strain and using at least a quarter per cup of butter. (And don't forget other essential tips like decarboxylation, which can make all the difference.)

Now, trying to figure out the potency of your homemade butter is another story all together. There is no definitive way to measure potency without a lab. However, some (relatively) easy math is all you need to have a good ballpark estimate.

Ex. 7 grams of flower with 19.5 percent THC.

Step one: Multiply the amount of ground flower used by 1,000. (Ex. 7 grams X 1,000 = 7,000 mg)

Step two: Multiply the weight of your ground flower in milligrams by the percentage of THC in the strain. (Ex. 7,000 mg X .195 THC = 1,365 mg)

If you are using the full amount in your edibles, then you can figure individual dosage by dividing that final number by the number of servings. (Ex. 1,365 mg / 24 pieces = 56.875 mg per piece)

What is the Least Weed Needed to Make Potent Cannabutter?

The problem with making your own edibles is that there are numerous factors that will change the outcome of your final product. While the least cannabis recommended when making cannabutter is 3.5 grams, most will tell you to use at least 7 grams (a full quarter ounce) if you want potent edibles. However, when dosing with edibles you should always start with less and build from there to ensure the most enjoyable experience.
